Storage Tip:
Basil is best used fresh and loses most of its aromatic properties when dried.
It keeps longest when stored at (air-conditioned) room temperature in a perforated plastic bag (optimal temperature is 16C).
Preparation Tip: There's debate about whether tearing basil leaves instead of chopping them helps to prevent browning, but many kitchen experts still advise delicately slicing the leaves to allow the full basil flavour to be released in dishes. This is especially important in raw versus cooked dishes.
Did you know... Basil leaves are used as a digestive aid as well for their antiviral, antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. Its oils can also be extracted and utilized for their aromatherapy qualities.
Culinary Compatibility: Basil has highly aromatic qualities and flavor profiles; it emits notes of citrus, clove, anise and cinnamon.
Pairs well with tomatoes, garlic, onions, corn, pears, mint, strawberry and cow’s milk cheeses. Use on pizzas, in salads, or with pine nuts, pistachios or walnuts to make pesto.
Health Information: Basil contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene and vitamin A, and are an excellent source of iron.
