Many Asian countries have long enjoyed the flavor and the health benefits of seaweed, but chefs, grocery stores, and consumers around the world are finally beginning to catch on. In ancient times, seaweed (gim, in Korea, or nori, in Japan) may have been harvested from rocks and driftwood and was included in a bride’s dowry. But it wasn’t long before industrious farmers and fishermen devised ways to cultivate seaweed on bamboo stalks and nets. Now nearly 20,000 tonnes of seaweed are produced annually in Korea alone.
Yes, seaweed is good for you. It is high in vitamins A, B6, and B12, as well as protein, iron, and fiber, so it makes a great snack for you or your kids.
