Saugeen Country Yogurt
Markdale, ON
Saugeen Country Farm has been in operation since 1986. There are three principle operators on this small family farm located just 2 hours north of Toronto, Ontario. There is Ingo and Sabina Huesing, and Johanna Schneider. All three are originally from Germany and only began farming in 1986 when they started Saugeen County Farm. They eventully began making plain yogurt on the farm, using the milk from their herd of 50 dairy cows and specially selected bacterial culture.

Saugeen Country Farm has been certified organic by the Bio-Dynamic Society of Ontario since 1988. Ingo Huesing says that they aim to make the farm as self-sustaining as possible, which means growing all of their own feed, breeding and birthing their own cows, and processing all of the yogurt right on the farm. Farming organically, says Ingo, is the only way that they know how to farm - he would never have farmed any other way. Like many other children of the 60s, the Huesings were a part of the "back to the land" movement which has inspired them to farm responsibly, giving back to the land what they take from it. Ingo, Sabina and Johanna maintain strong ties to their farmland and farm with only the utmost respect for the earth.
