Raincoast Trading
Delta, BC
Mike Wick's family has been in the fishing business for four generations and he learned very young to embrace environmental stewardship and responsibility, so the founder of Raincoast Trading comes by his concern for the future of fish and their habitat legitimately.
Raincoast Trading has been selling premium wild seafood products since 1978. Based in Vancouver, the company is proud to offer consumers sustainably-harvested, gourmet canned seafood.
Raincoast Trading adheres to the highest sustainability standards when catching, processing and packaging its seafood. The company's seafood is single-cooked and packed in natural fish oils, which results in a rich, dense flavour and loads of extra nutrition typically not found in most canned seafood products.
Raincoast Trading is the first Canadian packaged retail seafood company endorsed by the respected Ocean Wise™ conservation program as an environmentally-friendly seafood choice for retail grocers and consumers around the world. In 2012 Raincoast Trading tuna was ranked #1 in Greenpeace’s sustainable tuna ranking.
To further our commitment to environmental consciousness, Raincoast Trading embraces the environmentally sustainable concept of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Refuse". All products are responsibly yet attractively packaged. All cans are fully recyclable and our labels are printed on recyclable paper enhanced with award winning artwork, using soy based inks devoid of plastics and high gloss finishes.
Fuelled by a rapidly growing demand for natural and organic food, Raincoast Trading's fine seafood products represent the natural choice for the educated, conscience-driven consumer. Raincoast Trading has a continued commitment to producing premium quality, nutritious seafood, promoting healthy lifestyles, and improving the quality of life for our valued customers. Raincoast Trading is the natural choice.
Raincoast Trading is dedicated to our local fishing industry and employs only local fishermen and fishing vessels. We are committed to delivering our customers with a superior quality product abundant in nutrition and flavour. We have chosen not to support harmful farming practices and harvest only wild caught seafood using environmentally sound fishing practices. It is part of our commitment to deliver our customer seafood that is low in fat and cholesterol as well as being one of the most naturally beneficial food sources in the world.
All of Raincoast Trading's salmon and tuna products are caught in the ocean environment of the Pacific Northwest. This area is located along the coast of Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Due to fish migration patterns, both tuna and salmon in this area are known to have higher concentrations of oil than if they are were caught in other areas. These oils, known as Omega 3's, are essential in maintaining optimum health.
Responsible Harvesting Methods Traditional methods of harvesting do not always consider non - targeted species and unwanted fish are carelessly thrown over board. The stress that this style of catch and quick release put on these fish causes them to go into shock and die. The type of nets used in traditional methods can harm or kill other marine life such as dolphins. Rather than support these destructive methods, Raincoast Trading has chosen to use responsible harvesting techniques as part of our ongoing commitment to being an ecologically responsible company.
Our salmon harvesting methods are enhanced through the use of portable fish traps as well as modern selective harvesting techniques. These methods allow us to conduct a thorough, species - specific harvest, separating all non-targeted species from the catch. These fish are then placed in holding tanks until they may be carefully released into their environment unharmed.
Raincoast Trading's Albacore tuna are harvested using specialized "hook and line" techniques as a replacement for the traditional, non - discretionary, dolphin killing netting practices. Instead of using nets, this method harvests the Albacore by trolling 12 barbless hooks behind each fishing vessel. This procedure helps reduce the number of non - targeted species being caught.
No Water Added Many seafood providers cook their product twice, a process that can rob the fish of most of its nutritional oils and rich flavour. To keep the fish from drying out in the can, water or oil is often added during the canning procedure.
To ensure a superior quality product we only cook our product once. Our product is sealed solely in its own naturally occurring juices allowing us to eliminate the addition of water or oil. This allows us to provide consumers with naturally nutritious product with intense flavour.
The Benefits of Sea Salt Traditional processed salts are made chemically rather than mined. They also contain sugar as a cheap filler as well as aluminum and iodine. It is for these reasons that we have eliminated processed salts from our salt added canned products and replaced it with sea salt. Sea salt, the only natural salt available today, has all the minerals in tact and has a good potassium/sodium balance giving it a great taste without all the additives.
