Tom's of Maine.
Kennebunk, ME
Tom's of Main believes that their company "can be profitable and successful while acting in a socially and environmentally responsible manner". The company was founded by Tom and Kate Chappell over 30 years ago.
In 1968 the Chappells decided move to the small town of Kennebunk, Maine and they began using all natural unprocessed foods and pure, earth friendly products whenever possible. In their "move back to the land" Tom and Kate immediately realized that there were no naturally sourced personal care products available. Since both Tom and Kate had backgrounds in business, they decided to manufacture and distribute their own line of natural personal care products.
The first product they made was a phosphate free liquid laundry detergent, the first available on the American market. The containers of liquid laundry detergent were labeled with postage paid refillable containers that could be sent back to be reused. The company continued to grow and develop and in 1975 they introduced their first natural toothpaste. This was followed by the birth of their first child, which inspired Kate to develop natural baby shampoo and then deodorant, mouthwash and shaving cream. By 1983 Tom's of Maine was grossing annual sales of close to $2 million. The next phase was to introduce Tom's of Maine products into conventional supermarkets. The growing awareness of health issues has helped Tom's of Maine to establish themselves in the mainstream market, but the have not lost sight of their original health food roots.
All of their products are made with only the highest quality natural ingredients. There are no artificial flavours, colours sweeteners, preservatives and no animal products. None of their products are tested on animals and they rely mainly on plants and herbs for ingredients.
