Gull Valley Farm
Blackfalds, AB
In 1992 Scott Epple of Gully Valley Greenhouses built his first six bays of greenhouses where he grew tomatoes. Every few years he expanded and now has two acres of land where he grows a wide variety of tomatoes, which include Beefsteak, Tomato on the Vine, Cocktail on the Vine, Roma, Cherry, Grape, Yellow, Orange, Heirloom, Mini Roma, and Cherry on the Vine. The tomatoes are picked fully ripened, and handled only at the picking and selling stages. In addition to tomatoes, Scott also carries a variety of peppers, living lettuce, and Italian Romano green beans.
These are hydroponically grown products that use biological controls to manage insects, weeds and diseases. The growing medium is coconut fibre, which is simply ground up coconut husks. This is a great growing medium because it holds water very well and allows for increased oxygen which is important for healthy roots.
