Howard Leffers
Coaldale, AB
The Leffers brothers, Howard and his wife Irene, and Cornelius and his wife Jennifer, own/operate a small irrigated farm just north of Coaldale, Alberta. The brothers, following in their parents' footsteps, have been farming since 1990.
The farm has been certified organic since 2004. The Leffers family decided to convert to organic for several reasons. Organic agriculture, while more labor intensive, allows them to farm in a more sustainable manner. Organics also fits in with their desire to produce food for those in the local area first. It is their belief that if at all possible the consumer should have a wide selection of local food to choose from.
In keeping with the diversity required by organic production, the farm produces organic wheat, alfalfa, dry beans, carrots and red beets, along with a small black currant orchard. Land is also rested on occasion; every year one part of the farm is not planted or harvested to allow the natural systems recharge themselves.
