Prairie Mill Bread Co. was started in 1997 by Karen and John Juurlink in Calgary. Owen Petersen opened a new location in Edmonton in 2008, after working in the Calgary location since 2001 where he fell in love with baking and the Prairie Mill products. At Prairie Mill, Owen and his team believe in making a healthy product for their consumers, and specialize in pioneer-style breads made from 100% prairie wheat that is milled in-house and mixed with seeds, grains and fruits. In July 2010, Prairie Mill was recognized with the first Alberta Food for Health Awards - a Premier’s Award, which recognizes producers for their work in creating healthy food choices for Albertans. Prairie Mill uses only natural ingredients in their bread, including 100% Organic Wheat milled daily and no added fat or preservatives, which appeals to health conscious individuals. The 100% Whole Wheat breads are whole grain, as the wheat is milled as soon as it arrives from the farmer. The proofing process ages the dough so that Prairie Mill bread is guaranteed to stay fresh and delicious for seven days.
