Artesian Acres began in 1984 when the Smillie's purchased the family homestead of one hundred and sixty acres nestled in the foothills of central Alberta. The land had never been "conventionally" farmed. The Smillies, realizing the importance and the scarcity of prime farmland, which has never been subjected to chemicals, continued the organic farming methods of their ancestors.
Constant searching for variable crops to grow organically resulted in a small successful plot of Quinoa in 1987. In 1988, Artesian Acres harvested the first commercial crop of golden quinoa grown organically in Canada. Realizing the marketing requirements involved in swinging consumer tastes to grains, let alone the golden hued Quinoa, the Smillie's put their energy in to marketing as well as growing. It was soon obvious that a broader product line was needed. In 1990, Artesian Acres introduced Kamut Brand Wheat to the Canadian market.
By 1992, the demand for their organically grown grains far exceeded the family farm's capacity. Organic producers across the Prairies were now required. Fifteen organic producers representing over 10,000 acres of land are now growing both of these ancient grains for both the Canadian and export markets. Early in 1993, Clive Gregory joined the Artesian Acres team. His 30 years of sales and marketing experience helped to implement an aggressive merchandising and marketing plan. Located in Toronto, Clive is able to service the Ontario and Quebec market place. In 1994, Artesian Acres Inc. introduced its innovative line of Kamut Pasta.
