A young, edible, tightly coiled fern frond that resembles the spiral end of a violin (fiddle). When preparing Fiddleheads, ensure that they are fully cooked before eating.
This generally means 10-12 minutes of sauteeing or boiling, or 20 minutes of steaming before continuing with the recipe. Undercooking them will result in severe indigestion; however, when properly prepared they are delicious indeed.
Fiddleheads have a flavor akin to an asparagus / green bean / okra cross, and a texture that's appealingly chewy. Fiddleheads can be found throughout the eastern half of the United States, ranging from as far south as Virginia and north through the southern third of Canada.
