About the product
This sampler is made of a rotating selection of apples, varying with the different cultivars growing seasons. The box will always include at least 10 lbs of at least 4 different types of BC grown apples, which means there will always be more than 25 apples in a box.

The apple is one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits, and a member of the rose familys. Apples grow on deciduous trees which originated in Central Asia, where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found today. Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe, and were brought to North America by European colonists. They have been present in the mythology and religions of many cultures, including Norse, Greek and Christian traditions.

There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples, resulting in a range of desired characteristics. Different cultivars are bred for various tastes and uses, including cooking, eating raw and cider production.

General information
Storage Tip: Apples stay fresher if they are kept cold so store them in the fridge. Apples give off ethylene gas, which causes produce near them to ripen too quickly so put them in a plastic bag. Apples cause carrots to go soft so keep your carrots and apples well separated.

Preparation Tip: To keep cut apples from browning, brush with lemon or lime juice, or drop in acidified water (3 tbsp. of lemon juice in 1 quart of water)

Did you know... The apple tree is the most heavily cultivated in the world. The Macintosh is the most popular apple. There are over 7000 varieties of apples.

Culinary Compatibility: Apples are great to add to turkey stuffing or even a stir fry. Applesauce goes well with pork. Apples can be used as a substitute for sugar when cooking (e.g. use apples instead of sugar when making cranberry sauce)

Health Information: An apple a day really does keep the doctor away. Well, at least cancer doctors and heart surgeons. The pectin in apples reduces cholesterol and the quercitin (a flavinoid) reduces the risk of cancer. The boron in apples is thought to help make menopause easier and reduce calcium loss.
