Red Fife is Canada’s oldest successfully grown landrace wheat that originated from southern Ukraine. Named after David Fife from Peterborough, Ontario who originally received the seed from a friend via Glasgow in 1842. It was found to be an excellent milling wheat. Red Fife was the industry standard in Canada from the late 1800?s to the early 1900?s. Most varieties of wheat today owe their ancestry to this particular grain. If you have wheat sensitivities, Red Fife may be a possible alternative. This could be due in part because Red Fife was never subjected to chemical inputs unlike conventional grown grains today. As a whole grain milled with our unique low-temperature impact milling process , Red Fife retains the important nutrients and baking qualities that make it ideally suited for traditional Artisan Baking.

Organic Whole Grain Red Fife Flour
Nunweiler's Flour Co. Nunweiler's Flour Co.
Kelowna, BC
The Nunweiler family started farming in Saskatchewan in 1910. At that time most people knew where their food came from, and they often knew who grew it. Four generations later, the Nunweiler family is still running their family farm with the same philosophy they have had all along. They are committed to using only safe, natural ingredients and ecologically sound packaging, a task that is more challenging in than it sounds, especially in today's complicated world.

Up until 1987, the Nunweiler farm was a basic farming operation that produced mainly red spring wheat. In 1988, they began milling their own flour, after becoming discouraged by modern milling practices. They use a unique process called "impact milling" which produces a whole grain flour with out preservatives, conditioners or chemical agents. The flour is fresh and minimally processed which makes it superior baking flour. This is the flour used in Grandma Nunweiler's Pancake mix.

Working on a farm, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast has to be substantial and nutritious. Grandma Nunweiler's whole grain pancakes are exactly that. These are pancakes made the "old-fashioned" way starting with whole-grain flour. There are no preservatives or artificial ingredients added which are often included in conventional pancake mixes. They use only non-aluminum baking powder and sea salt in the mix.
