Our Skim Milk Powder is from cows that are Pasture and Grain Fed. Pasture fed during the warm months in Canada and made from Canadian Milk, free of rBST (recombinant Bovine Somatotropin) {hormone that is injected into cows to increase milk production}.
Skim milk powder can be used in frozen foods, dairy products, select bakery products, and different variety of foods. Dependant on usage levels and food system application, this product can effectively emulsify, opacify, enhance aeration, promote cell formation, promote a desirable structure/body, promote desirable textures, contribute to shelf stability, bind water effectively, act as a thickening agent/viscosity enhancer, promote desirable colouring, and provide many more beneficial attributes.
The Non-Instant Skin Milk Powder is made from 100% Canadian milk, from dairy farms in Ontario and Manitoba. It is manufactured from fresh skim milk which has been carefully handled and processed to minimize protein denaturation and to preserve the quality and freshness associated with fresh skim milk solids.
The product itself and the animals it is derived from are not products of genetic engineering. Skim Milk Powder doesn't contain GMO material and is considered non-GMO. We do not, however, have information regarding the feed that was offered to the animals so we would not be able to guarantee that the animals were not fed GMO products.
Regarding the use of antibiotics and hormones, we wanted to let you know that, while the administration of growth hormones to dairy cows is still allowed in the US, Canadian dairy farmers do not use growth hormones such as BST or rBGH.
In Canada, the use of artificial growth hormones is prohibited and any antibiotic use must comply with Canadian Law. Milk supply safety and quality regulations are very strict and include provisions for farm and processing plant inspections and testing.
When cows are sick and require antibiotic treatment, the milk they produce is discarded for a regulated period of time to ensure the milk collected at the farm is antibiotic-free. As an additional assurance, every truckload of milk is tested before being unloaded at the processing plant. If antibiotics are found, the entire load is discarded and the farmer who contaminated the load is penalized. These regulations apply to both regular and organic milk.
The Canadian dairy industry is supply management run, this means they only produce enough milk to satisfy the Canadian consumer demand. Dairy farmers in Canada do not have the pressure to overproduce milk for export, which could potentially stress their animals' natural production pattern.
Cows need to be healthy and content in order to produce optimal amounts of high-quality milk. Most Canadian dairy farms are small, family-owned operations, with an average of 100 or so cows per farm. They are not factory farms, but rather small businesses.
