The Deglet Noor is smaller in size when compared to a Medjool date. Deglet Noor means "dates of light"; they are called this because of their translucence. Deglet Noor dates are amber-colored, with a great delicate flavour and are distinguished by a pleasant, nutty aftertaste similar to that of a lightly roasted peanut, although not as sweet or moist as the Medjool.
While generally harvested in the winter, Deglet Noor dates are available throughout the year. Deglet Noor boast a chewier and much drier texture than Medjool dates, and keep a little longer. They also make an excellent springtime fruit as we await the arrival of the local berry crop.
Dates will always be a good source of fiber and nutrient dense in potassium and manganese. Similarly, all date varieties are fat free, saturated fat free, trans fat free, and cholesterol free making them a delicious and healthy snack.
If storing for a long time, dates should be stored in a cool storage. They will retain their flavour and nutritive value up to one year if stored in the refrigerator, they can be kept even longer if frozen.
