Vitamin C is metabolized by oxalic acid, which means that large amounts of vitamin C may increase the oxalic acid concentration of urine and thereby increase the risk of oxalate kidney stone formation. Doses of 1000 mg of vitamin C appear to increase the risk of kidney stones by 40% in individuals with a history of such stones. High doses should be avoided in such cases (Taylor et al., 2004). Vitamin C may increase the amount of aluminum absorbed from aluminum compounds, which may pose problems for people with impaired renal function (Fairweather-Tait et al., 1994; Kayan et al., 2010). Anyone with renal problems who takes medications that contain aluminum (such as some antacids) should avoid taking vitamin C unless directed by a health care practitioner. High doses of vitamin C may modulate the growth of cancer cells, although it is not yet known if this has negative or beneficial effects (Jacobs et al., 2015). As such, anyone with cancer should only use high doses of vitamin C when advised to do so by their oncologist. Individuals with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency should avoid using high doses of vitamin C as this may cause hemolysis (McEvoy, 1998; Michels & Frei, 2013). Vitamin C increases the absorption of non-heme iron, which could lead to worsening of hemochromatosis, thalassemia, and sideroblastic anemia (Davidsson et al., 1998; Lane & Richardson, 2014).
