As the brand began to gain a loyal following, Maya Gold was added to the range in 1994 - the product of a holiday Jo & Craig made to where they discovered cocoa farmers were being hurt by some larger confectionery companies who were trying to drive cocoa prices down. They agreed to pay the farmers a fair price for their crops and created the flavour of Maya Gold to capture the taste of the rainforests where the cocoa is grown. This way of doing business didn't seem different to them - it was what came naturally but it susbequently earned them the UK's first Fairtrade mark.
Today, Craig & Jo remain true to the original values of their business, with ethical trading & organic products. Their aim continues to be the creation of chocolate products that gives a taste experience like no other. They believe every new creation has to be the best of its kind & take time and care to bring out the intense flavour that has now become their trademark.
Based in London near Waterloo , Green & Black's is now owned by Cadbury Schweppes. They operate as a stand alone business with founder Craig Sams remaining as Chairman. Cadbury Schweppes are now able to enhance the brand's success by adding their in-depth knowledge of cocoa production to ensure continued supply of quality, organic cocoa ongoing to support their even increasing range of products.
While it might be natural to assume that Green and Black’s was named after its founders but it was actually just dreamt up by Craig & Jo with fond memories of confectionery brands of their childhoods, like Callard & Bowser and Barker & Dobson.
