Orchid vanilla products are made using only the finest vanilla beans available. Orchid vanilla comes from blossoms that open for only a few hours, only one day a year. The flower must be hand-pollinated and then it takes up to 6 weeks to reach full size (6 to 10 inches long), and 8 to 9 months after that to mature. The mature pods are then hand-picked and cured for a 3- to 6-month process that begins with a 20-second boiling-water bath followed by sun heating. Once the beans are hot, they're wrapped in blankets to sweat. This takes place everyday for the entire curing period until the beans are dark brown and have the characteristic vanilla flavour and aroma.
